United Motorcyclists of Vermont’s 30th Annual Toy Run Recap

We’re Not Sugar; We don’t Melt

Saturday, August 13, 2016 – we’d heard the weather forecast that had been predicting Armageddon-like weather for the weekend; we woke up before 6am to overcast skies and dry roads.

UMV's 30th Annual Toy Run 2016

Real Vermonters don't believe weather forecasts
As we rode through Morrisville on our way to Johnson to meet up with other UMV members, we hit a few drops of rain. After picking up some signs and traffic cones we headed to Montpelier to set up for the event. I had to take my rain jacket off then, it was too hot and humid and not raining so it seemed really pointless to be wearing a plastic coat.

When we got to the Blue Cross parking lot, the staging area the Toy Run, the new food vendor was set up as well as Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA). BACA is forming a Vermont chapter and they have a ride coming up. Protecting children from abusers is a worthy, worthy cause. The new food vendor had a great setup. Michelle formerly of the Busy Bee Diner in Glover, VT handled the food vending this year. The selection and quality were fantastic.A little rain, a little fog at the BCBS parking lot There’s nothing like a hot dog and a big tray of fries for second breakfast, although the fresh muffins, cookies, Italian sausage and cheeseburgers were pretty tempting too.

Light rain started to fall a little while after we set up and became steadier as the morning wore on. It got a little foggy too. Check out the photo gallery above.

Miss Vermont – Rylee Field arrived and looked perfect. She joked about being wet but it seemed like the raindrops avoided her? She was so poised, confident and so upbeat you couldn’t help but like her. Speaking of which, vote for Rylee to be one of the top 15 contestants at the Miss America pageant, looks like you can vote daily.

As the number of participants grew to over 250, about a half to a third of what we expected, Lt. Governor Phil Scott arrived on one of his bikes for the ride to the State House.

The ride was slow and wet; there was steady light rain at noon. Local police led the parade and blocked traffic to keep things safe. The Rid Knights handled the parking for us again and had everyone parked in no time.

The Shriners were ready for us when we got there, they had plastic bags and popup canopies ready to receive the donated toys.

UMV President Holly Wilkins addressed the crowd; we had a moment of silence for all of those serving our country, for Rod Clark – Freedom of the Road member and founder of the Toy Run, and for Don Henn Sr. – a UMV active member from the start.

Senator Joe Benning introduced Phil Scott and reminded us all that Lt. Governor Scott cast the deciding vote in our favor to remove violation points on your license for riding without a helmet. It’s sad that our elected officials want to treat motorcyclists differently than other drivers. You’ve really got to give Phil Scott props. He was attending a bicycle event in southern Vermont – a previous commitment, but he got on his motorcycle and rode up to Montpelier to take part in our Toy Run. Then rode back to southern Vermont to finish the bicycle event.

So, the turnout was light – a third to a half of what it should have been. We still collected a lot of toys for the kids, cash donations for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, sold some t-shirts and gave away free UMV memberships to those who attended. We’ll be selling t-shirts on line soon; it’s a pretty cool design this year.

Charlie O’s, a Montpelier landmark and really fun bar, is celebrating their 40th year in business. Since Rod Clark thought up the Toy Run in their bar they threw an after the Toy Run party. They had parking spaces blocked off out front so we were able to pull right in and thank God it was cool and dark inside and there was room for us at the bar. The sun came out right about then and it was wicked hot and humid outside. Charlie O’s had several really good bands scheduled and one with a female lead singer/guitarist did a cover of Bobby McGee that had the whole place singing along. Good times.

The ride home was perfect. The roads were dry, the air cooler and less humid, and there was a mix of blue sky, clouds and sun. Most of RT 12 between Montpelier and Morrisville (except for a bad patch south of Worcester) has been recently paved. It made for a perfect ride after a year of planning and working on the 30th Annual Toy Run.

Hope to see you next year, and remember – real Vermonters don’t believe weather forecasts.

No Throwing Candy, Please…

No throwing candy

No Throwing Candy

Yes, we know how fun it is to toss candy along the Toy Run parade route and it’s great seeing the kids scrambling to pick it up but…

It’s not safe. We’ve seen kids run out into the road causing bikes to hit their brakes causing more bikes to hit their brakes to avoid crashing into the bikes ahead. It puts everyone in danger. Please don’t do it.

We know how disappointing it is and welcome any suggestions. If you have any ideas on how to safely toss candy to the kids, making sure none of it lands in the road and without being a distraction to the driver, let us know.

We’re not against fun; we’re for safety.

tl;dr – As always, we ask that riders do not throw candy to kids watching the parade. It’s dangerous, we do not want any one hurt. Safety is no accident so lets be safe out there.

* If you don’t know, tl;dr stands for too long; didn’t read.

The Veterans’ Place – Support Our Vets…

The Veterans' Place December, 2015 Donation

The Veterans' Place in Northfield, VTOn Wednesday, December 16, 2015 a few members visited the Veterans’ Place in Northfield, VT. Clarence, UMV’s treasurer made a motion at our last monthly meeting that we should make a donation during the holidays. The Veterans’ Place was suggested and all present agreed.

We first heard of the Veterans’ Place last summer when they asked if they could sell raffle tickets at the Annual Toy Run, we were glad to have them.

So on Wednesday Holly (president), Clarence (treasurer) and Joe (sgt. at arms) got the checkbook, some donated items and some home-baked goodies and went for a visit.

We were greeted by Karen Boyce (Administrative Manager/Case Manager), Phil Rowell (Facilities Manager/Case Manager), several residents and Patch the dog.

From the Veterans’ Place Website…

“Our purpose is to help Vermont’s Homeless Veterans by providing desperately needed resources in an all-in-one locale so these Veterans may regain their PRIDE, reach their full potential, and once again become contributing members of society.”

“The Veterans’ Place is a transitional housing facility combined with assistive services for Homeless Veterans in Central Vermont. Our goal is to help Homeless Veterans transition from the homeless population. We have more than twenty-five other dedicated partners helping us.”

United Motorcyclists of Vermont is dedicated to motorcycle safety, education, awareness, pro-motorcyclists legislation and individual freedom. Helping our Vets is an important part of supporting individual freedom. Our veterans have made sacrifices to protect our country, and world. There will always be aggression in the world and our Vets stood ready to defend our lives and liberty.

Supporting our troops and Vets is something that each and every one of us should do.

Karen Boyce, the administrative manager told us how some of the vets are overwhelmed during the holidays by the outpouring of donations and good will at Christmas. Maybe we could be a little more like Scrooge, after his reformation, and try to keep the spirit of Christmas in our hearts all the year?

Some of us have discussed this before and I would like to see if we can set up donation boxes at our meeting locations: the VFW in Hyde Park and the American Legion in Orleans to collect non-perishable food and other items that the Veteran’s place could really use. We can collect those items at our regular meetings, or more often if necessary, and get them to the vets.

Water, Water Everywhere…

Water, water everywhere…

No good deed goes unpunished

Vermont Pure? Not so pure....
Remember the Toy Run back in 2014? It was a hot, sunny, August day and the new food vendor at Blue Cross ran out of water and soda. We remember. UMV decided to sell bottled water at the 2015 Toy Run to make sure that didn’t happen again. President Holly Wilkins contacted Vermont Pure (Crystal Rock) and told them what we were looking for. She said it was a fund raising charity event that was meeting at the Blue Cross parking lot in Berlin and we were expecting up to 800 people. We never sold water before and so depended on Vermont Pure’s expertise. After many phone calls back and forth the salesman at Vermont Pure suggested we get a pallet and a half of bottled water.

We were quoted $5.25 per case – 50 cases per pallet. It was suggested we order one and a half pallets. That comes to about 1800 bottles of water for up to 800 people. Sounds like a lot but on a hot August day people could easily drink 2 or 3 bottles and we didn’t want anyone going thirsty. We all know what it’s like being out on hot pavement with nothing to drink. Vermont Pure suggested we have the water delivered directly to Blue Cross as they are already a customer and it would make things easier. Of course we agreed. The maintenance manager at Blue Cross was happy to help us any way he could and received the delivery for us and stored it inside until the day of the Toy Run. We were pretty surprised when we saw the large pallets but having never done this before, didn’t know enough and we were too busy then to count.

Instead of the pallet and a half – 75 cases / 1800 bottles that we ordered, 144 cases / 3486 bottles had been delivered – that is a crazy amount of water for a crowd of up to 800. We contacted Vermont Pure / Crystal Rock to see if they would take back some of the water, it’s still in storage at Blue Cross and still wrapped just a they delivered it. They refused. We did not realize just how much they had delivered and charged us until we received the invoice over a month later – for double what we expected. We asked why 3486 bottles were delivered instead of the 1800 that we ordered and they said “didn’t you count it when it was delivered?” No, we did not count it as it was delivered to an third party, at their suggestion.

So, this is still not resolved. We really want to think this was a simple mistake and not some sort of bait-and-switch, but we’ll see.

It’s really sad that our biggest charity event of the year is subjected to something like this.
