January 2013 Meeting Minutes

The January 2013 meeting was held in Orleans at the Legion, With 12 members present, 8 reg., 4 board. It began at 7:10. the pledge of allegiance was said, The Secretary and Treasurers reports were read and accepted.

OLD BUSINESS–Trial of Ben Miller, accused of striking and killing motorcyclist Ron Turgeon. Holly and Monty went to court to hear motions by the State and lawyers. The defendant was not even present at the hearing, and his lawyer called in on the phone. The date of the next court hearing is in late February. Millers lawyer wants a court date late in the year, but the judge wants a sooner date for the trial to start.June 30, will be a year. Mr. Turgeon’s widow drove from New Hampshire to be at the trial and nothing got resolved! We are really sorry she has to go through this, and the court system doesn’t seem to be working for her!!

RAFFLE— the item we wanted to raffle off is back ordered so it will not be in for the raffle, it was a teak carved Harley toy bike. If we can’t find anything else, we will raffle of a free ticket to next years Harley Raffle.

NEW BUSINESS— KINGDOM THUNDER—Joe Kasprsak, Director of service operations, e-mailed Gabrielle, that it was a go for Burke Mtn. to host our 2013 Kingdom Thunder Rally! They will be starting construction of their new hotels at Mid Burke, but think it wont interfere with the rally. He is also working on getting a deal on the rental of some of the condos. They have a price of $30.00 per person to do the meals and B-B-Q,$10.00 per day per person for camping, So we are at $50.00 Per Person to come and camp for 2 days. we will have to work out some price structure so IROC can still make something on this. If we can work out a pricing system to make IROC their money, and keep Burke Mtn. happy, we would like to get at least a five(5) year deal with them. We will check with Wilkins and Green Mtn. Harley on sponsorship of this event. I will check on bands and sound system for the music end of it. I have talked with a company called Dark Star lighting for a price on sound and lights, they quoted me between $1500.00-$2000.00 to do a venue outside the size of what we want. They do all of Jay Peaks sound. Everything is a go for a starting point, so we can go on from here!

HARLEY RAFFLE— Margie would like for us to get a release for the winner to sign the night they win the bike, to absolve us of the liability on the bike until the winner registers it. Last years winner did not register it until June. The bike was sold and titled to us, so we feel we were on the hook until he registered it and payed the taxes on it. We will check with an attorney on this. We will set up at 10:00 AM and the doors open at 4:00 PM.

Please see the thank you note below for the turkeys that were donated at Christmas time…

Due to a generous donation for the Christmas Day Dinner, by the United Motorcyclists of Vermont (UMV), I did not need/use all the Turkey I purchased. As the Christmas Day Dinner was for the whole community, I decided to use the excess in a way that would benefit the whole community.

The attached poster gives further details.

Please share this with your friends…come and have dinner…volunteer (if you would like to)…or let me know how I can sell you a raffle ticket. Proceeds benefit the Newport Firework Fund.

For the Record, everyone was generous for the Christmas Day Dinner!

Thanks.

The 29th Annual Esther and Reynold Choiniere Community Christmas Day Dinner was a great success, due in part to your contribution. Together we made a Bright and Joyful day for many people in our community.

We served about 200 meals. We had in attendance about 140 people, with approximately 35 volunteers, and prepared about 20 dinners to go. The music Mark Shelton provided, as always was incredible, as was the help of the volunteers. I feel fortunate to be able to say I know a lot of people, but there were volunteers that I had never seen before, and every one of them had a great time.

This year the dinner is being extended – in a manner of speaking. Because of the generous gift of turkeys by your group, the United Motorcyclist of Vermont, we ended up with some extra meat. Instead of cooking it, or giving it to one, or two organizations, which only would benefit a few, I decided to have a fundraiser for the Newport City Firework Fund. Just as the Christmas Dinner was for the whole community, so are the Fireworks.
I think you know, whenever possible, I prefer to make things available to everyone. The Firework Dinner will be Saturday, January 26, from 4-6 at the Gateway in Newport. Reservations will be required (by calling 673-8875). It will be Turkey and Biscuits, with Lago’s Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, as well as coleslaw, cranberry sauce, coffee and dessert. The dinner will be $10.00 with the proceeds benefitting the firework fund.
Your donation was very appreciated. Thank you and Happy New Year!
Sincerely,

Tim Daley
